Busy is the word of the season for the Pearson family. We are busy busy busy around our house! I know I've done a TERRIBLE job of keeping people in the know so I thought it might be nice to give a short (but probably long) update of our goings-on.
Jack
School is going well for Jack. He likes his teacher and seems to be having fun. Mrs. Schindler is teaching him all sorts of fun little songs about letters and numbers and weather and seasons and on and on. So far I don't think Jack has actually learned anything he didn't already know but a little review never hurt anyone. I know most of his learning has been focused on getting him comfortable with his surroundings and routine. Jack is making new friends -- some good, some not so good. Fortunately Jack's behavior has been spectacular -- no card changes in 2 weeks! I knew he was made for school! He's doing okay with the transition to no-nap. He struggles at the end of the day, usually getting in trouble for attitude issues right before bed. And this last week he had a few days where he trudged more than he walked to school. It breaks my mommy-heart to know he is so tired; I want so badly to declare a "pajama day" and let him rest! There have been more than a few times when I've considered throwing in the towel and schooling him at home on my schedule. But I know he's where he belongs so I'll take comfort in that.
Jack also started football about 2 weeks ago -- his first game is this coming Saturday (expect pics!). After convincing him that flag football was just as good as tackle, Jack has really taken to the entire thing. He loves his cleats and mouth guard (sometimes that love gets him in trouble at practice!).
Sam
Sam starts school tomorrow actually. I'll post pictures as soon as I get a chance. He met his teacher last week and I think he will do well. Sam is one of the older kids in the class and one of the only fully potty-trained kids (most are working on it). I'm interested to see what this year brings for him. He is verbally very far ahead of the kids we met at the "Meet the Teacher" morning -- and truthfully he seemed ahead in a lot of ways (one of the blessings/curses of having an older brother I suppose). I certainly hope he isn't bored. These kids will eventually be in his "grade" but there's a much larger difference in "barely 2 and almost 3" than "barely 5 and almost 6". (I just re-read this, realizing how incredibly arrogant my thoughts translate to the written word. I apologize. I, by no stretch of the imagination, think Sam is somehow above preschool. I just wonder how the age difference is going to play out this year, when developmental milestones are crammed into such short time spans. I've never watched peer-to-peer interactions from the side of the older child...Jack was and is and will always be the youngest in his peer group.)
Sam is doing better with his transition to Jack's school hours. He's stopped asking all day when Jack will come home and he's willing to eat lunch without Jack. He's even starting to get his routine with mom. He rarely stops talking from the time we drop Jack at school to the time we pick him up!
Grace
Grace is growing before our eyes! Today, in fact, she decided to try her hand at walking. Opting to forgo the "easy way", Grace has started standing, unassisted, from a sitting position and then taking a step toward what she wants. I expect she'll be walking by her first birthday (which is in about 6 weeks, thankyouverymuch!). She is mainly on solids -- choosing, rather vocally actually, to eat what her brothers eat rather than her baby food. She's still nursing a few times a day and we'll continue that until she's solidly on cow's milk. Grace's hair is getting really thick and long. I'm struggling to work on the pony-tail, pig-tail thing. I'm terrible at it -- I'm so worried I'll pull her hair! Fortunately I have several friends with daughters who are showing me the ropes. Grace is starting to exert some serious personality, and we are starting to get fits when she doesn't get her way. She is quick to cry when her brothers (usually Sam) do things she disagrees with. Things are about to get really interesting with Little Miss!!
Adoption
The adoption process is coming along nicely. We will finish our Training Initiatives and complete our FBI fingerprinting and background checks this week actually. We still have one 8 hour Behavioral Management class to take before we are done with all the trainings. Left to complete is our ministry assessment, budget sheet, proof of education (just have to find these -- unless they want the ones hanging on the wall!), fire inspection and home study. In the middle of our trainings we realized that while we technically have enough space for more kids, any special needs that might arise would be difficult to meet in our current house. So we decided to put our house on the market and did this past Wednesday. So far we've only had one showing (fingers crossed for more soon!). Our plan is to see what happens over the next 90 days; hopefully we'll sell it before then. If it doesn't sell then we'll pull it and re-list in February. What does this mean for our adoption? Not much really. We are looking to complete our fire inspection and home study in October. If we've had no movement on our house when we'll go ahead with that plan. If by October 1 we have an offer on our house or if things look promising we'll push things back until we're in the new house. Our only reason for pushing it back at all is because the fire inspection could potentially cost us $500 before the fire marshal even gets to our front door. We'd rather only pay that once. But if it doesn't work out that way then it's not a problem. We expect to be licensed about 2 weeks after our home study and then expect to be matched in as little as 2-3 days from that day. Once we're placed we have 6 months to get a new fire marshal inspection in our new residence -- if we have to do things that way. If you didn't do the math all things are potentially pointing to our placement before Christmas!
That's about all on the Pearson front. Hopefully I can get back to writing a little more frequently now that the boys are at school!
