Leaving the house -- ready to go!
I'm a MOM (Mother Of Many) and wife. Here I chronicle loves and laughter, tears and fears; all while trying to seek first His kingdom, simply, authentically, completely.

Jack's First Day of Kindergarten
August 23rd brought with it beautiful skies and the first day of school for Jack! Overall the day was a success. Jack did great at drop-off, no hesitation at all. He came home declaring he'd learned all sorts of fun things -- including the bathroom rules (go, flush, wash, leave). Sam asked about him all day long and had trouble eating lunch without him (where's Jack mama? We have to wait for Jack mama!). Here are some pics of our first morning walk!

Yardstick Musings
I'm having one of those days where it seems everything I do just doesn't quite measure up. "Those" days seem to be coming all too frequently for my liking lately. I think I need a new yardstick.
Time and again I find myself wishing I'd done it a little bit better or faster or cleaner or fancier or...
My outfit for today seemed cute when I looked in the mirror in the morning...then I caught a glimpse of myself walking into preschool next to another mom. She was cute -- misfire one.
I thought I looked "athletic" shopping in the grocery store post-run...until I bumped into a casual acquaintance and realized I just looked (and probably smelled) in serious need of a shower and bar of soap -- misfire two.
Suddenly all these misfires are adding up to catastrophe.
I ran into a girl I know. She's a word-girl like myself. A fellow teacher and reader and writer of all things English. She stays home too -- sort of. And while I'm busy stuffing diapers and contemplating earth shattering topics like the benefits/hindrances of liquid bluing in my laundry detergent, you want to know what she's doing? Writing. Yeah, I said writing. So what, right? Not to me. See to me she's exploring, much like an archeologist, digging up treasures. She's stretching parts of her brain that honest to goodness I've forgotten I even possessed. She's formulating and postulating with each stroke on her keyboard. She's surrounded, even if only figuratively thanks to the electronic age, by stacks of words by learned individuals; her only job while in that moment is to take what they've said and add her brilliance to it. And my job? Scrubbing the tile coated in chocolate milk.
Obviously my job is more than diapers and milk and I know that. I know that. Nonetheless there are times when I long to stretch myself, to practice the skills that I've mastered, to use the gifts I've been given. Truth be told there isn't much need for upper level writing and literary exposition skills in a house full of preschoolers. I'm having a difficult enough time just trying to get this minute post written with all the interruption around me.
KA-POW. Small misfires breed catastrophe.
And suddenly every decision, every step, every everything seems to fall short, to fail to measure up.
I need a new yardstick.
A wife of noble character who can find? ... She sets about her work vigorously; her arms are strong for her tasks. ... She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at days to come. ... She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction in on her tongue. She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Proverbs 31, selected verses
I think that'll work.

State of Our Family
Busy is the word of the season for the Pearson family. We are busy busy busy around our house! I know I've done a TERRIBLE job of keeping people in the know so I thought it might be nice to give a short (but probably long) update of our goings-on.
Jack
School is going well for Jack. He likes his teacher and seems to be having fun. Mrs. Schindler is teaching him all sorts of fun little songs about letters and numbers and weather and seasons and on and on. So far I don't think Jack has actually learned anything he didn't already know but a little review never hurt anyone. I know most of his learning has been focused on getting him comfortable with his surroundings and routine. Jack is making new friends -- some good, some not so good. Fortunately Jack's behavior has been spectacular -- no card changes in 2 weeks! I knew he was made for school! He's doing okay with the transition to no-nap. He struggles at the end of the day, usually getting in trouble for attitude issues right before bed. And this last week he had a few days where he trudged more than he walked to school. It breaks my mommy-heart to know he is so tired; I want so badly to declare a "pajama day" and let him rest! There have been more than a few times when I've considered throwing in the towel and schooling him at home on my schedule. But I know he's where he belongs so I'll take comfort in that.
Jack also started football about 2 weeks ago -- his first game is this coming Saturday (expect pics!). After convincing him that flag football was just as good as tackle, Jack has really taken to the entire thing. He loves his cleats and mouth guard (sometimes that love gets him in trouble at practice!).
Sam
Sam starts school tomorrow actually. I'll post pictures as soon as I get a chance. He met his teacher last week and I think he will do well. Sam is one of the older kids in the class and one of the only fully potty-trained kids (most are working on it). I'm interested to see what this year brings for him. He is verbally very far ahead of the kids we met at the "Meet the Teacher" morning -- and truthfully he seemed ahead in a lot of ways (one of the blessings/curses of having an older brother I suppose). I certainly hope he isn't bored. These kids will eventually be in his "grade" but there's a much larger difference in "barely 2 and almost 3" than "barely 5 and almost 6". (I just re-read this, realizing how incredibly arrogant my thoughts translate to the written word. I apologize. I, by no stretch of the imagination, think Sam is somehow above preschool. I just wonder how the age difference is going to play out this year, when developmental milestones are crammed into such short time spans. I've never watched peer-to-peer interactions from the side of the older child...Jack was and is and will always be the youngest in his peer group.)
Sam is doing better with his transition to Jack's school hours. He's stopped asking all day when Jack will come home and he's willing to eat lunch without Jack. He's even starting to get his routine with mom. He rarely stops talking from the time we drop Jack at school to the time we pick him up!
Grace
Grace is growing before our eyes! Today, in fact, she decided to try her hand at walking. Opting to forgo the "easy way", Grace has started standing, unassisted, from a sitting position and then taking a step toward what she wants. I expect she'll be walking by her first birthday (which is in about 6 weeks, thankyouverymuch!). She is mainly on solids -- choosing, rather vocally actually, to eat what her brothers eat rather than her baby food. She's still nursing a few times a day and we'll continue that until she's solidly on cow's milk. Grace's hair is getting really thick and long. I'm struggling to work on the pony-tail, pig-tail thing. I'm terrible at it -- I'm so worried I'll pull her hair! Fortunately I have several friends with daughters who are showing me the ropes. Grace is starting to exert some serious personality, and we are starting to get fits when she doesn't get her way. She is quick to cry when her brothers (usually Sam) do things she disagrees with. Things are about to get really interesting with Little Miss!!
Adoption
The adoption process is coming along nicely. We will finish our Training Initiatives and complete our FBI fingerprinting and background checks this week actually. We still have one 8 hour Behavioral Management class to take before we are done with all the trainings. Left to complete is our ministry assessment, budget sheet, proof of education (just have to find these -- unless they want the ones hanging on the wall!), fire inspection and home study. In the middle of our trainings we realized that while we technically have enough space for more kids, any special needs that might arise would be difficult to meet in our current house. So we decided to put our house on the market and did this past Wednesday. So far we've only had one showing (fingers crossed for more soon!). Our plan is to see what happens over the next 90 days; hopefully we'll sell it before then. If it doesn't sell then we'll pull it and re-list in February. What does this mean for our adoption? Not much really. We are looking to complete our fire inspection and home study in October. If we've had no movement on our house when we'll go ahead with that plan. If by October 1 we have an offer on our house or if things look promising we'll push things back until we're in the new house. Our only reason for pushing it back at all is because the fire inspection could potentially cost us $500 before the fire marshal even gets to our front door. We'd rather only pay that once. But if it doesn't work out that way then it's not a problem. We expect to be licensed about 2 weeks after our home study and then expect to be matched in as little as 2-3 days from that day. Once we're placed we have 6 months to get a new fire marshal inspection in our new residence -- if we have to do things that way. If you didn't do the math all things are potentially pointing to our placement before Christmas!
That's about all on the Pearson front. Hopefully I can get back to writing a little more frequently now that the boys are at school!

Beach Vacation 2010
Goodness I'm behind in news aren't I?!
A week after we returned home from our Hill Country Vacation we loaded the van again and headed to Port Aransas; it was vacation time with Grandma Pearson this time! We stayed in a gorgeous! beach house that seriously made me reconsider my decor scheme here in Katy, and we played the part of beach bums for the long weekend. Lots of sand, sun and surf! We flew kites and cooked hamburgers on the beach; it was so much fun! Sam emerged as our beach baby during our time on the coast -- we had to pry him from the waves at the end of each day. Jack had a blast trying to kung fu the waves and Grace ate her weight in muddy sand (I tried to stop her but it was a lost cause...). We ended our trip with a stop at the Texas State Aquarium in Corpus Christi. The boys loved it! Here are some of my favorite pics from our trip.

Hearts and Milestones
This kid

tough though he may be

has a sweet heart for God
And he's not afraid to tell you about it.
Father's Day of this year Jack decided to follow Christ as his personal Savior. He's been asking questions about salvation and Christ's sacrifice for a while so his decision came as no surprise to Luke and me. We've known for a long time that Jack had all the head knowledge he would need so we've been patiently waiting for the Holy Spirit to issue conviction on his young soul. It was a great Father's Day gift for Luke to be able to lead Jack to the Christ on a couch in our church's foyer in between services. And so Jack will be baptized August 22nd. We are so excited for him to be reaching another milestone as he travels his spiritual journey!!
Our prayer for Jack --
as God fashions him into a warrior in His image, that Jack would:
hide God's word in his heart that he may not sin against Him (Psalm 119:11) and that when he opens his mouth he would fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel (Esphesians 6:19).

closer to a year...
Grace is 9 months old. Can you believe it? She is closer to her first birthday than to her actual day of birth! Hard for me to comprehend some times!
Here's an update on Miss Grace...more for my record keeping than anything...what's been happening in the last 3 months.
* Grace can crawl. No shock there but I forget to write about it when it happened...around 7 months. She waited all of 2 days after that before she started pulling up on things. Now she's perfected the one knee down-one knee up crawl technique, allowing her to travel at what seems like the speed of light. She is also an expert at pulling up on EVERYTHING and inching her way toward her goal.
* Grace can climb. She started with a couple of stairs, then it was her brother's chair. Now it's just about everything. She will dangle by her arms and inch her feet up if the object it too tall. We had to lower her crib to the lowest setting and take out anything she could use to fashion a makeshift ladder. Seriously...we did.
* Grace has 2 teeth! She cut both within 24 hours at 8.5 months. Those precious little pearly whites popped through the surface and have gone no further!
* Grace can definitely say MaMa and DaDa! She uses them forcefully when she wants!
* Grace FINALLY started eating baby food and table food. After what seemed like an eternity of aversion, she decided around 8.5 months that big kid food is good! It may or may not have something to do with the introduction of powdered sugar donuts to her diet ;)
* Grace is 18lbs (17lb 15oz at her appointment) which puts her in the 43%; she is 26.25" putting her in the 17% (short little girl!); her head is 18" putting her in the 92%.
* Grace has yet to develop any stranger anxiety and usually gives a big toothy grin, complete with a wrinkled nose, to everyone who stops to talk to her.
* Grace loves to swim (and eat mud at the beach!) but doesn't like taking a bath. I'm trying to convince her that a lady needs to smell pretty!
* Grace loves her babies! She passes over the mountains of boy toys and heads straight for her baby dolls -- and sometimes a necklace or two if we're at a friend's house!
